Some people say musical talent is genetic, something that is passed down through a bloodline, almost like mother nature’s gift to certain individuals. If this is to be believed then it is Meleka’s rise into the music industry was not so much a coincidence but more of a predestined path taking shape. With Rick Clarke as her Godfather and UK Lovers Rock Legends, Janet Kay and Carol Thompson as close family friends, Meleka definitely had music in her blood from a young age.

Having won her first talent contest at the tender age of 6 years old, music has definitely been a fixture of the singer/songwriters life for many years. “I have been singing all my life, and come from a musical background and a musical household.” My first competition was in Willesden Green Library” she recalls “I sung SWV’s ‘Weak’ and my passion continued to grow from there.”

As a winner of MTV’s Hugo Urban Rules Meleka was given the opportunity to release her first single ‘Go’ (Now It’s Over Boy)’. The song became a cult underground classic, which amassed over 2 million collective views on YouTube (fans radio rips and the official music video) and still remains a regular fixture of many Dj’s sets to this very day.

Meleka followed up the success of Go with another club classic ‘Miss Me’, which spent over two months in the top 5 on the BBC Radio 1xtra UKG Chart.
Following her rise into the dance scene opportunities for collaborations have come knocking and Meleka has gladly obliged, providing vocals for Bassment Jaxx on the title track from their Album ‘Scars,’ Machines Don’t Care’s ‘Beat Dun Drop’ and more recently Redlight’s ‘Switch It off.

Whilst enjoying an impressive run in the dance scene Meleka ensured her passion for writing songs was never lacking behind, she has been collaborating with the likes Rudimental, Jacob Banks, Jess Glynne, Wiley, Gorgon City, Fraser.T. Smith, and U.S diva Kelis, to name a few.

“I love writing and performing in general but there is something special when someone else wants a song that you’ve written, because it means your words have connected with someone and there is no better feeling than that co-sign.”

Although she originally emerged from the dance scene Meleka had always been conscious of her desire to explore alternative sounds, the result of which has emerged with a UK, Soulful edge a sound she calls Soul/Pop. “My musical tastes are so varied, so it did take me a while to find a sound that works for me, but I love good songs. Songs that are poetic and tell a story but are still relatable, that’s what I do, that’s my definition of soul/pop is, popular music that the soul can relate to.”

Having spent the best part of last year in the studio preparing brand new material for an autumn release and with forthcoming collaborations with Snakehips, Bodhi, Wayward and Bearcubs on the horizon, it is clear to see why Meleka’s star is on the rise.
